Skinwalker Ranch and the Baltic Sea Anomaly: Are These Two Mysteries More Similar Than We Realise?
I have been fascinated by both Skinwalker Ranch and the Baltic Sea anomaly for some time now. I regularly watch The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch, and as the investigation into what may be hidden inside the mesa has developed, I kept thinking about another mystery that has interested me for some years now, the strange anomaly discovered on the floor of the Baltic Sea.
The more I thought about the two cases, the more similarities seemed to appear. Both involve mysterious formations hidden from view, both have attracted UFO theories, and perhaps most interestingly, both locations have been associated with reports of electronic equipment behaving strangely.
So that made me wonder, could these two seemingly unrelated mysteries have more in common than we realise?
Thousands of miles apart, hidden beneath two very different landscapes, these two mysteries, on the surface, should have absolutely nothing to do with one another.
One lies beneath the rocky mesa of Utah’s infamous Skinwalker Ranch, a location that has been associated with UFO sightings for decades, as well as unexplained electromagnetic disturbances and other unusual phenomena.
The other rests around 90 metres beneath the Baltic Sea, where a Swedish diving team discovered a strange circular formation on the seabed in 2011.
Yet if you look beyond their very different locations, an intriguing pattern begins to emerge.
At Skinwalker Ranch, investigators have repeatedly reported unusual GPS readings, malfunctioning electronic equipment and strange electromagnetic activity while attempting to determine whether an unknown structure or object could be hidden inside the mesa.
At the Baltic Sea anomaly, divers have made eerily similar claims. According to members of the Ocean X team, cameras and satellite communication equipment stopped functioning when they were directly above the mysterious formation, only to begin working again when they moved away.
One mystery lies beneath a Utah mesa. The other beneath the Baltic Sea.
Both have been linked to UFO theories.
Both have generated claims of unexplained interference with technology.
And both may ultimately turn out to have completely natural explanations.
But are the similarities simply coincidence?
Or could these two strange locations be displaying different versions of the same phenomenon?
What Is Hidden Inside the Skinwalker Ranch Mesa?
Skinwalker Ranch is a 512-acre property in northeastern Utah’s Uintah Basin that has become one of the world’s best-known locations for alleged paranormal and UFO activity.
Since 2020, The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch has followed owner Brandon Fugal and his team of investigators attempting to document the phenomena using cameras, spectrum analysers, radar, GPS equipment, drones, rockets, LiDAR and many other instruments and equipment.
Of all the mysteries investigated at the ranch, however, one has become increasingly important. The mesa!

Over several seasons, drilling and scanning operations have led the team to investigate the possibility that something unusual may exist inside the rocky formation.
The investigation has included horizontal drilling into the mesa and the recovery of unusual fragments from drilling material. During Season 6, the team described material recovered from deep within the mesa as potentially resembling engineered or high-tech material, although its ultimate origin remains unproven.
And the mystery has continued into Season 7.
Season 7 premiered on May 19th, 2026, with further investigation of ceramic material recovered from the mesa. In the May 26th episode, “Flying High”, they described a test as producing evidence of buried objects, while the following episode saw the team begin another drilling operation aimed at reaching a possible object inside the mesa.
None of this however demonstrates that a spacecraft, or even an artificial structure, is buried beneath Skinwalker Ranch.
But it does explain why the idea has become such an important part of the investigation.
Something appears to be producing unusual responses during attempts to examine the mesa.
And that is where another part of the Skinwalker Ranch mystery becomes particularly interesting.
When Technology Starts Behaving Strangely
Anyone who regularly watches The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch will recognise a recurring problem that the team always seem to experience.
Equipment doesn’t always behave as expected.
GPS devices have produced bizarre positional data. Drones apparently deviate from planned flight paths or lose positioning information. Instruments have recorded unexpected signals, and experiments have frequently been interrupted by equipment malfunction problems.
A compilation of experiments the team conducted in 2024 specifically described tests involving suspected GPS dead zones, along with GPS data that appeared to show an impossible trajectory. Other experiments used ground-penetrating radar, LiDAR and radar to investigate anomalies above the ranch’s so-called Triangle.
Importantly, anomalous GPS data is not itself proof of anything paranormal.
GPS signals are extremely weak by the time they reach receivers on Earth and can be affected by interference, signal reflection, receiver errors, atmospheric conditions and deliberate or accidental radio-frequency interference.
The more interesting question is whether the disturbances reported at Skinwalker Ranch repeatedly occur in the same locations and under controlled conditions.
That is precisely what the team of investigators at the ranch are attempting to establish.
The ranch’s official website describes reports of unexplained aerial phenomena and electromagnetic disturbances as part of the site’s history, while the modern investigation uses continuous surveillance and scientific instrumentation to monitor the property.
But strange reports involving electronics and a mysterious hidden object are not unique to Utah.
More than a decade before the current Skinwalker Ranch investigation became a popular television show, something remarkably similar was being reported beneath the Baltic Sea.
The Mystery at the Bottom of the Baltic Sea
In June 2011, Swedish treasure hunters Peter Lindberg, Dennis Åsberg and their Ocean X team were using sonar while searching for shipwrecks in the Gulf of Bothnia between Sweden and Finland.
Instead of finding a shipwreck, their equipment detected something unexpected.
The sonar image appeared to show a roughly circular formation around 60 metres across on the seabed.
It sat approximately 90 metres below the surface and its unusual appearance quickly attracted international attention.

The blurry image was interpreted by some observers as resembling a giant disc. Comparisons with the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars quickly followed, as did suggestions that Ocean X might have discovered a crashed UFO and so Ocean X returned to investigate the location.
Reports from the object described unusual shapes, ridges and features around the formation, while what appeared on sonar to be a long disturbance or “track” across the seabed added to speculation that something might once have travelled across the sea floor before coming to rest, as if a UFO had crashed and skidded along before coming to a stop.
However, the actual evidence is considerably less dramatic than many images circulating online suggest.
The famous image of the Baltic anomaly is a sonar scan, not a photograph of a clearly defined metallic spacecraft.
Some of the impressive images showing stairs, smooth walls and a giant disc-shaped structure are reconstructions or artist impressions rather than photographs of the object itself.

That distinction is important.
Sonar interpretation can be difficult, particularly when the available data is limited.
But what happened when Ocean X attempted to investigate the anomaly directly is where the comparison with Skinwalker Ranch becomes much more interesting.
The Baltic Sea Equipment Mystery
Ocean X diver Stefan Hogerborn made one particularly strange claim following the team’s investigation.
According to Hogerborn, some cameras and the team’s satellite telephone stopped working when their boat was directly above the anomaly.
When they moved away, the equipment reportedly began functioning normally again.
The alleged effect appeared to occur within an area of roughly 200 metres around the object.
If the report is accurate, it presents an obvious question.
What could cause electronic equipment to malfunction in a specific location above an underwater formation?
And it is difficult not to notice the resemblance to some of the claims coming from Skinwalker Ranch.
In Utah, investigators have reported GPS anomalies and electronic interference and malfunctions around areas they believe may contain hidden structures or unusual phenomena.
In the Baltic Sea, investigators searching the unexplained formation reported that electronic equipment behaved abnormally when they approached it.
These events occurred in completely different environments and were reported by completely different groups.
That doesn’t make them connected. But it certainly makes them worth comparing.
This comparison reveals something important.
The strongest similarity isn’t actually the alleged UFO connection.
It is the reported relationship between unusual locations and malfunctioning technology.
And there may be conventional explanations for both.
Could Geology Cause the Strange Effects?
The less spectacular explanation for both mysteries may lie underground.
Different rock formations contain varying concentrations of magnetic minerals, conductive materials and mineral deposits capable of interacting with electromagnetic fields.
Local geology can also complicate scientific measurements.
At Skinwalker Ranch, this possibility deserves particular attention because strange electromagnetic effects have been discussed alongside the mesa investigation.
A strong local magnetic source can affect magnetometers and compasses, while radio-frequency interference can disrupt wireless communications.
GPS is slightly different though. GPS receivers determine position using precisely timed radio signals transmitted by satellites. Interference, reflections or corruption of those signals can easily produce wildly inaccurate results.
This gives investigators an important problem to solve.
If GPS information becomes unreliable, equipment that relies on using that information, particularly drones, can behave strangely even when there is no physical force acting upon them.
A drone apparently moving away from an invisible boundary, for example, becomes far less mysterious if its navigation system temporarily believes it is somewhere else.
That doesn’t explain what caused the interference though.
But it does demonstrate why unusual equipment behaviour shouldn’t automatically be interpreted as evidence of an unknown force.
The same caution should be applied to the Baltic Sea anomaly.
Scientists Have Examined Material From the Baltic Anomaly
The UFO interpretation of the Baltic anomaly has a significant problem.
Samples collected around the site have been examined by geologists.
Volker Brüchert of Stockholm University analysed material provided by Ocean X and reported that much of it consisted of granite, gneiss and sandstone, precisely the kinds of rocks you would expect to find in an area heavily shaped by glaciers.
He therefore considered that a glacial geological explanation is considerably more likely than an artificial structure.
Other specialists have also questioned how much can genuinely be concluded from the original sonar image.
Marine geologist Dan Fornari of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution told Live Science that the image contained numerous artefacts and lacked enough resolution and detail for a confident interpretation.
The scientific case therefore leans strongly towards the Baltic anomaly being a natural geological formation.
But this still leaves an interesting question.
If the Ocean X equipment failures really occurred as described, were they simply unrelated technical problems?
Could local environmental conditions have caused them?
Was there an electromagnetic source nearby?
Or was the apparent relationship between the distance from the anomaly and equipment failure simply just coincidence?
More than a decade later now, those claims remain far less thoroughly tested than the anomalies now being investigated at Skinwalker Ranch.
What If Something Artificial Really Is There?
There is another possibility, one that is considerably more speculative.
What if the strange effects aren’t caused by geology?
Any advanced technological system capable of producing powerful electromagnetic fields or radio emissions could potentially interfere with nearby electronics.
We don’t need extraterrestrial technology to demonstrate that principle.
Powerful transmitters, radar installations, electrical infrastructure and military electronic-warfare systems can all affect electronic equipment under certain circumstances.
A sufficiently strong signal near GPS frequencies could also interfere with satellite navigation.
So, purely hypothetically, if an unknown technological object were buried underground or submerged beneath the sea, interference with nearby electronics would not be an impossible consequence.
The problem is evidence.
There is currently no verified proof that an operational technological device exists inside the Skinwalker Ranch mesa. Not yet anyway.
There is also no verified evidence that the Baltic Sea anomaly is a spacecraft.
So without that evidence, the idea remains an intriguing hypothesis rather than an explanation.
Yet this is precisely what makes the comparison fascinating.
If either location were eventually proven to contain an artificial object, the reports surrounding the other would immediately deserve another look.
Two Hidden Objects, Or Two Geological Mysteries?
Perhaps the simplest explanation is that I am comparing two unusual geological formations that have acquired extraordinary stories.
The Baltic Sea was dramatically shaped by glaciation. Rocks and sediments carried and deposited by enormous sheets of ice can produce structures that look surprisingly organised.
The Skinwalker Ranch mesa is itself a complex natural geological formation.
Human beings are also exceptionally good at finding familiar shapes and patterns in ambiguous data. A circular sonar return can easily become a “crashed flying saucer” and unusual underground obstruction can become a buried craft.
Add electronic glitches to the story and the mystery becomes considerably more compelling.
There is another factor worth remembering.
Investigators naturally pay more attention when equipment behaves unexpectedly at a place already associated with strange phenomena.
A GPS failure in an ordinary field is probably blamed on GPS.
A GPS failure at Skinwalker Ranch becomes part of the Skinwalker Ranch mystery.
A failed camera during an ordinary diving expedition is an inconvenience.
A camera failure directly above something being called the “Baltic Sea UFO” becomes evidence people remember for more than a decade.
This doesn’t mean the reports should be dismissed.
It means the circumstances need to be replicated.
That is where Skinwalker Ranch potentially has an advantage.
Skinwalker Ranch Could Provide the Experiment the Baltic Anomaly Never Had
The Baltic Sea anomaly received enormous attention following its discovery, but it has never undergone the kind of continuous, instrument-heavy investigation that is now taking place at Skinwalker Ranch.
Skinwalker Ranch is monitored repeatedly using different technologies.
The team can return to the same location.
They can change variables.
They can compare one instrument with another.
And most importantly, they can attempt to reproduce strange anomalies.
This approach is vital.
One malfunctioning GPS receiver isn’t particularly compelling.
Multiple independent GPS receivers producing similar errors and malfunctions at the same location, under repeated conditions, would be much harder to dismiss.
The same applies to magnetic fields, radio signals, radar returns and other unexplained equipment failures.

Modern scientific UAP research increasingly emphasises this kind of multi-sensor approach. Researchers involved with projects such as the Galileo Project have argued that unusual aerial phenomena should be studied using multiple independent instruments, including cameras, radar, radio-frequency sensors, microphones and environmental monitors, so that genuine anomalies can be distinguished from instrument artefacts.
The Skinwalker Ranch investigation isn’t proof of extraterrestrial activity.
But the principle of collecting multiple types of data is exactly what would be required to determine whether the reported technological disturbances are real.
And it suggests an obvious experiment for the Baltic Sea anomaly.

What Would Happen If Scientists Returned to the Baltic Sea Anomaly Today?
Technology has advanced considerably since Ocean X first recorded its mysterious sonar image in 2011.
A modern expedition could approach the Baltic anomaly with an array of independent instruments.
High-resolution multibeam sonar could map the structure in far greater detail.
Magnetometers could measure any unusual local magnetic field.
ROVs could continuously film the anomaly.
Independent GPS systems aboard surface vessels could monitor navigation behaviour.
Radio-frequency spectrum analysers could look for interference.
Water and rock samples could be collected from precisely documented locations rather than simply from the surrounding seabed.
Most importantly, equipment could repeatedly approach and retreat from the anomaly and if electronics consistently failed at approximately the same distance each time, that would be significant.
And if nothing unusual happened, an important part of the legend could finally be put to rest.
Either result would be interesting.
And after watching years of experiments at Skinwalker Ranch, perhaps that’s the biggest question raised by comparing these mysteries is.
Why hasn’t the Baltic Sea anomaly been investigated again using the same kind of modern technology?
Coincidence, Geology, or Something Stranger?
There is currently no evidence demonstrating that Skinwalker Ranch and the Baltic Sea anomaly are physically connected.
There is no confirmed UFO buried beneath Utah.
There is no confirmed alien spacecraft resting beneath the Baltic Sea.
Scientific analysis strongly suggests the Baltic formation could have a perfectly natural glacial origin.
The true nature of the suspected structures within the Skinwalker Ranch mesa also remains unresolved.
But the similarities are difficult to ignore.
Two locations.
Two mysterious formations hidden from ordinary view.
Two histories of UFO speculation.
And the most intriguing, two sets of reports involving electronic equipment behaving strangely when investigators get close.
Perhaps unusual geology is responsible for both.
Perhaps the equipment failures have mundane explanations.
Perhaps our tendency to connect mysterious events is creating a pattern that isn’t really there.
But there is one way to find out.
They need to keep measuring.
They need to keep testing.
And, in the case of the Baltic Sea anomaly, they really should go back.
Because if a future investigation were to discover that electronic interference really does consistently increase as instruments approach that strange object beneath the Baltic Sea, the comparisons with what is happening thousands of miles away at Skinwalker Ranch would suddenly become much harder to dismiss.
