Best Ghost Hunting Equipment for Beginners (2026 Guide)
So you’ve caught the ghost hunting bug. Maybe it was a TV show, a visit to a haunted location, or just a lifelong fascination with what might be lurking in the dark. Whatever got you here, hello and welcome, this is one of the most rewarding hobbies you can get into, and the gear has never been better.
The problem? Walk into the world of paranormal investigation equipment for the first time and it’s overwhelming. Ghost boxes, EMF meters, EVP recorders, thermal cameras… where do you even start?
So to help you out I’ve put together this guide to cut through the noise. These are the pieces of equipment I’d recommend to anyone just starting out, nothing unnecessary, nothing overpriced for what it does. Just solid, simple and reliable gear that will serve you well on your first investigations and beyond.
WHERE TO BUY:
I recommend Ghost Stop for all of the equipment in this guide. They’ve been the go-to supplier for paranormal investigators for over 18 years, they design and build much of their own gear, and they’re used by investigation teams worldwide.
What Do You Actually Need as a Beginner?
Before we get into specific products, let's talk about what a beginner's kit actually needs to cover:
- EMF detection, measuring electromagnetic field fluctuations, one of the most widely used methods in paranormal investigation.
- Audio recording, capturing EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena), unexplained sounds or voices that don't register in real time.
- Communication tools, devices designed to facilitate potential responses from spirits.
- Light, because you'll often be investigating in complete darkness.
That's all you really need to start out. You don't need $1,000's worth of kit on day one. Just start with the essentials, learn how to use them properly, and build from there.
EMF Meter, The Foundation of Any Ghost Hunting Kit
An EMF meter detects changes in electromagnetic fields. In paranormal investigation, unexplained EMF spikes, particularly in locations with no obvious electrical source, are considered potential evidence of a presence.
For beginners, the Rook 2 EMF Data Logger from Ghost Stop is an excellent starting point. It doesn't just detect EMF in the moment, it logs the data, so you can review readings over your entire investigation and spot patterns you might have missed in real time. It's also got a clean digital display that's easy to read in the dark.

Rook 2 EMF Data Logger
Price: $149 (on sale from $199)
If you want to start even more simply, a basic handheld K2 EMF meter will do the job for your first few investigations. But the Rook 2's logging capability gives you so much more to work with, and it's a tool you'll still be using when you're a seasoned investigator.
EVP Recorder, Don't Miss a Sound
EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) recording is one of the oldest and most respected methods in paranormal investigation. The idea is simple, you record audio during an investigation and review it afterwards, listening for sounds, words, or voices that weren't audible at the time.
Ghost Stop's EVP Wrist Recorder 3 is a very clever bit of kit, it's worn on your wrist, leaving your hands free during the investigation. It has one-button recording, an adjustable band and a front screen so you always know it's running.

The hands-free design is genuinely very useful when you're navigating in a dark location. The last thing you want is to be juggling devices when something starts happening.
Ghost Box / Spirit Box, Communication
A ghost box (sometimes called a spirit box) rapidly scans through radio frequencies, creating a wash of white noise and audio fragments. Many investigators believe that spirits can manipulate this audio to communicate by forming words or phrases. Whether you're a sceptic or a believer, it's one of the most interactive and compelling tools in any kit.
For beginners, the SBox Ghost Box + Recorder is the ideal entry point. At under $80 it's affordable, it has a built-in recorder (so you can review sessions afterwards), and it's one of Ghost Stop's most popular products, over 100 reviews and trusted by investigators at all levels.

If you want to go deeper, the Ovilus 5 is a more advanced communication device that converts environmental readings (EMF, temperature, etc.) into words from an onboard dictionary. It's a lot pricier at $579, but it's become a staple on popular TV investigation shows for good reason. For most beginners though, the SBox is plenty to start with.
The Beginner's Shortcut, A Ghost Hunting Kit
If you'd rather let someone else do the picking, Ghost Stop's pre-built kits take the guesswork out of it entirely. The Spirit Box Ghost Hunting Kit bundles an SBox Ghost Box, a Rook EMF Meter, and an EVP Wrist Band Recorder together, essentially everything covered in this guide, at a bundled price.

For a beginner who wants to walk into their first investigation properly equipped without spending hours researching individual items, this kit box is genuinely hard to beat.
Bonus: The BooBuddy, Surprisingly Effective
This one surprises a lot of people. The BooBuddy 2 Interactive Bear looks like a kids' toy, but it's a legitimate investigation tool. It's packed with EMF, temperature and motion sensors, and it asks questions during sessions, responding to environmental changes with coloured lights and verbal reactions.
The theory is that spirits (particularly child spirits) may be more likely to interact with a familiar, non-threatening object. Whether you buy into that or not, BooBuddy is one of Ghost Stop's most talked-about products and it's been used extensively on television investigations.

Its not essential for a beginner kit, but worth knowing about, especially if you’re planning investigations at locations known for child-related hauntings.
Building Your Kit: A Suggested Order
If budget is a consideration (and it usually is), here’s the order I’d build your kit:
Priority item and approximate cost
1st SBox Ghost Box + Recorder: $79
2nd Rook 2 EMF Data Logger: $149
Or… Spirit Box Ghost Hunting Kit (all three bundled): $219
That’s a complete functional beginner’s kit for under $220 if you go via a bundle route, and you’ll have everything you need to conduct a proper investigation and to carry on doing more in the future.
TIPS BEFORE YOUR FIRST INVESTIGATION
- Don’t go alone. Especially as a beginner, having a second investigator means a second pair of ears and eyes, and someone to corroborate anything unusual.
- Document everything. Note the time, location, temperature, and any unusual readings. Evidence without context isn’t much use.
- Rule out the mundane first. Before getting excited about an EMF spike, check for nearby electrical sources. Old wiring, pipes, and appliances can all cause readings. Same with noises, rule out animals, the wind, the weather etc. Good investigators eliminate the obvious explanations first.
- Be patient. Most investigations produce nothing remarkable. That’s fine. The discipline of thorough, methodical investigation is what makes the moments when something does happen so significant.
- Review your recordings. Some of the best EVP evidence is found days after an investigation when reviewing audio carefully. Don’t just check during, listen back with headphones in a quiet room.
