In September 1965, motorists near Perth, Scotland reported encountering a huge unidentified creature beside a dark country road.

More than 60 years later, the strange encounter remains a mystery.

What do you think they saw?

In September 1903, residents of the small town of Van Meter, Iowa reported a mysterious light, followed by encounters with something they couldn't explain.

More than 120 years later, the legend of the Van Meter Visitor remains.

What do you think they saw?

On September 27, 1989, a group of children playing football in a park in Voronezh, Soviet Union, reported seeing a strange deep-red object descend from the sky.

According to their accounts, an enormous humanoid figure emerged, reportedly around three metres tall, with a disproportionately small head and three eyes. The children also described a smaller figure resembling a robot.

The extraordinary story was later reported internationally by the official Soviet news agency TASS.

However, the TASS correspondent had not witnessed the alleged landing himself. His report was based largely on interviews with the children, and exactly what happened in the park remains disputed.

What do you think the children witnessed at Voronezh in 1989?

On September 26, 1954, Lucette Leboeuf was walking with her dog near Chabeuil, France when the animal suddenly began barking and howling.

At the edge of a field, Lucette noticed a strange figure she initially mistook for a scarecrow.

As she approached, she reportedly discovered a small humanoid figure enclosed in a translucent, diving-suit-like covering. Behind its cloudy helmet, she believed she could make out unusually large eyes.

Then the figure began moving towards her.

Terrified, Lucette ran and hid nearby. Moments later, she reported seeing a strange metallic object rise from behind the trees and rapidly disappear.

Crushed vegetation was subsequently reported at the alleged site of the encounter.

Decades later, Lucette was interviewed again and continued to describe the bizarre incident.

So what did she encounter in that field in 1954?

On September 25, 1965, physical chemist Dr George Walton and his wife were driving through the New Mexico desert near Rodeo when they noticed two mysterious white lights.

Initially mistaken for another vehicle, the objects appeared to be travelling only around 30–50 feet above the terrain.

Believing a low-flying aircraft might be approaching them, Walton accelerated his car to 80 mph.

But according to the Project Blue Book account, the mysterious objects accelerated with the car and continued pacing it.

After approximately two minutes, the objects fell behind, changed from white to pale blue and disappeared from sight.

The US Air Force investigated possible explanations including helicopters, reflections and a mirage, but the case was not satisfactorily explained.

The conclusion recorded in the case material: “The case remains unidentified.”

What followed the Waltons through the New Mexico desert that night?

On September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson reported seeing an extremely bright object descending over Redmond, Oregon.
Instead of crashing, the mysterious light reportedly stopped and hovered.

Dickerson headed to Redmond Airport, where FAA personnel also observed the object. Witnesses described strange red, yellow and green illumination, and the incident was reported through air-traffic-control and military channels.
Then things escalated.

Six F-102 fighter interceptors were scrambled from Portland to investigate.

As an aircraft approached the area, witnesses reported the mysterious object rising rapidly towards the clouds and disappearing from view.

The US Air Force considered atmospheric refraction involving Venus as a possible explanation, but the Project Blue Book case did not result in a positive identification.

So what was hovering over Oregon that morning?

On September 23, 1947, Lieutenant General Nathan F. Twining signed a secret memorandum titled “AMC Opinion Concerning ‘Flying Discs’.”

After reviewing reports of mysterious objects over the United States, the memo stated:

“The phenomenon reported is something real and not visionary or fictitious.”

The reports described circular or elliptical objects, sometimes appearing metallic and displaying unusual manoeuvrability and rates of climb.

But the Twining Memo did not claim the objects were extraterrestrial. It acknowledged possible conventional explanations and the lack of physical evidence while recommending that the phenomenon receive serious, classified investigation.

Nearly 80 years later, the Twining Memo remains one of the most fascinating documents from the beginning of the modern UFO era.

What do you think people were seeing in 1947?

On September 22, 1975, Indonesian engineer Tony Hartono Rusman reported seeing a mysterious object while working on an offshore oil platform near Cilamaya, West Java.

Tony managed to photograph the strange oval object above the tanker Arco Arjuna before it reportedly changed direction and shot vertically into the sky.

The photograph was later examined by physicist Fred Beckman, who suggested that a film defect was one possible explanation. Proper analysis, however, required the original negative.

That negative was taken to the United States — and was never recovered.

More than 50 years later, what did Tony photograph over the Java Sea?
