Award winning author Nathan Helm’s Kingdom Society: The Black Hood is the first book of the Kingdom Society series. It is an enthralling read with a great combination of epic fantasy and science fiction, making it an engaging read for fans of both genres.
The story follows Alyeth Zane, a young prince exiled to another time to escape a dark force known as the Black Hood, which has overthrown the kingdom of Targus. Years later, Alyeth returns with a mix of old friends and new allies to reclaim his home, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle.
Alyeth’s journey is one of self-discovery and resilience, making him a relatable and engaging protagonist. Supporting characters such as Xylok, Cindrel and Ezra, contribute depth to the narrative, each playing a critical role in the unfolding events.
One of the book’s best features is its imaginative world-building. It seamlessly merges magic, fantasy and technology, creating a universe that feels fresh and innovative. While reading the book it made think that if you took The Witcher video game and added some sci-fi technology to the genre, that’s how I imagined the world.
However with its dense narrative and numerous interwoven concepts, the story occasionally risks overwhelming its readers. With a good few twists and turns in the story, seasoned readers of epic fantasy might appreciate the complexity, newcomers might find it challenging to keep up. I sometimes found myself a bit lost and having to re-read some parts.
Saying that, I did enjoy reading the book and getting somewhat attached to the characters. Even though this book is not paranormal per se, if you enjoy stories that blend time travel, fantasy, and sci-fi, then I would recommend giving this book a read.
